The Loss of a Classmate

There are some things in life that tend to mark a milestone. Do you remember getting your drivers’ license? How about graduating from high school? college? Your first real job? Getting married? The birth of your first child?

But sometimes there are things that happen throughout the course of life that we would rather forget. In November, my high school class held it’s 25th reunion. It was a fun time catching up with everyone. It was shortly after that I remarked our class had not lost anyone in the last quarter century.

Little did I know that would change just two months later. A former classmate posted on Facebook that one of our classmates had died. It was a sudden death, not by accident, but possibly a blood clot. She leaves behind just a daughter. I knew her, but hadn’t seen her or spoken to her in years. She was supposed to attend the reunion, but never made it.

It just goes to show how precious life is, and that we should never take any one or any day for granted.

    Hey Mornin Guy,

I had heard at the reunion that Steve O’Brien had passed away… I just did a search, and apparently he died in 2004 of a lengthy illness.
Also, Mike Demmons passed several years ago… and kinda weird circumstances. My dad does a part time gig at one of the funeral homes in Canton and he said that he arrived at the home in a box that was welded shut. He had been shipped home from some place like Nicuragua (yeah, can’t spell that one). I can’t seem to find any more info on him. Very strange, very sad, as this was probably close to 10 years ago.

So now we are down three. Let’s hope it’s a long time before we hear of another. Sue’s passing really thru me for a loop.

Hope all is well down there, let me know if you head up this way!

    Hey Colette:
I completely forgot about Mike Demmons. My mom is good friends with his mother. He was in the army when he died.

I’m not sure about Steve O’Brien. I’m with you on Sue, her death has just really made me think. When we were in high school we all thought we were invincible.

It was great seeing you at the reunion. I will let you know next time I’m in town. It will most likely be March for my brother’s wedding.
