Buying a Car…

December 16th, 2009

newcar

I have taken the plunge. This is a picture of my new car. After driving around in the same Jeep for 10 years, I decided it was time to breakdown and get a new one.

I have to say buying a new car is not one of my top 10 favorite things to do, but I have to say it was as painless as buying a new pair of shoes, just a lot more expensive!

Anyways, wish me luck. Oh yeah, if you see my 4-Runner parked at the store, don't park near it. I'd like to keep it dent free for a while.

Merry Christmas!

Reading, Writing, and Common Sense!

December 9th, 2009

On this cold Thursday morning, I have to pause to wonder if our children are getting a well rounded education.

First, for the third time in months, Rick Rowe has incorrectly spelled the school principal. Instead of remembering that the principal is your “pal”, Rick insists on making it a principle!

But that’s not the reason behind this entry. This morning on my to get coffee, Sonja and I passed Byrd High School. It has a great history of turning out some great achievers. People who you hope have just as much common sense as book smarts.

This is why I have decided to write about this topic. I’m from the North, so I know what cold weather is and how to protect yourself against. But I’m not sure our children here in the south know that. This morning, I saw two students walking to the school, wearing shorts! The thermometer in my car said 30 degrees, yet they’re in shorts. One student was wearing a t-shirt. No jacket, no nothing, just a t-shirt and shorts. At least the other student had a hoodie on.

I understand what it takes to be cool. But should you get a cold to be cool!

Burning Down The House!

December 6th, 2009

If you’ve ever been to my house, Fletcher excluded, you know that I love to cook. Many times, I’ll get the gas grill going and throw on some steaks and chicken.

Well last night, things were really heating up. I threw a few steaks on the grill and went inside to prepare the rest of the meal. I started smelling smoke and when I looked outside, there was a plume of dark, black smoke coming out of my grill. My grill was on fire!

I was talking to a friend of mine later that night and he thought I was joking. It turns out, the grill I have, had a recall, because they can catch fire.

This is the first time I’ve been the focus of a recall.

Childhood Memories… Gone!

December 2nd, 2009

spork

We all have childhood memories that linger into adulthood. One of them for me is visiting the Kentucky Fried Chicken in my hometown. I can still remember the Colonel's original recipe chicken, the chunky cole slaw and the creamy mashed potatoes with gravy.

But there was also the spork. It was that special utensil used only for KFC. It's that combination fork and spoon.

Yesterday, I visited KFC for the first time in a long while. As I got in line to get my food, I was dismayed to find there was no spork waiting for me. Instead they had a separate fork and spoon.

At least they still had the cole slaw and mashed potatoes!

A True Civil War…

November 30th, 2009

Since moving to Louisiana, I have run into my first culture clash. As most of you know, I’m a yankee, born and raised in the suburbs of Boston. That has not been an issue until now. And it’s a fight that will be played out on a football field.

I find myself in a very precarious situation. I have long been a fan of the New England Patriots. The stadium where the Pats play is a mere 20 minutes from my house. As a kid, I remember watching Steve Grogran calling the plays. Now Tom Brady is doing an incredible job in that role.

But since moving to Louisiana, I have also enjoyed watching the New Orleans Saints. I lived in New Orleans for a short time, and to see the underdogs go undefeated so far this season is a great triumph.

Until now, the New Orleans - New England battle really hasn’t meant much. But tonight it takes on a whole new meaning. I want to see New Orleans keep their undefeated record, but I don’t want to see that happen at the expense of my Patriots.

So who do you cheer for?

May I Take Your Order Please…

November 18th, 2009

I am a very patient person. Sometimes I’m too patient. But there is one thing that burns me.

This morning, Sonja and I ran for our morning cup of coffee. We decided to pull into the Golden Arches, since Sonja wanted a bite of breakfast. I just wanted coffee.

We were behind one car in the drive thru line. The car had been parked in front of the menu board for a good minute or two before their order was taken.

I have no problem with this, the worker was very polite. And I understand that at times, it takes a minute before they can take your order.

Here’s the problem.  Despite sitting in front of the menu board, the person behind the wheel and her passenger didn’t know what they wanted to order. It took them another 5 minutes to figure out what they wanted.

Come on people, it’s McDonald’s. It’s been a while since the breakfast menu changed!

Hair Raising!

November 3rd, 2009

hairy-chest

Just came across a very interesting article. A psychiatrist actually did a study on men’s chest hair.

What he concluded was that men with more chest hair, as well as, hair on their backs were smarter. He found that many of the smartest members of Mensa were extremely hairy.

Use this tidbit as you will.

For Sale….

walmart-caskets

Walmart is hoping people will be just dying to shop there. The world’s largest retailer is now offering caskets and urns.

I have to admit, I think Walmart is a fantastic idea. Where else can you buy milk, bread, underwear, motor oil and a fishing pole under one roof? Now you can add a coffin to your list!

Right now the store is only selling them online. I hope if they start selling them in the stores they open a new double express line for people in a real hurry.

What Gives?

This is my desk phone. For some reason I have a problem with my phone cord.

No matter what I try, it always ends up in a tangled mess.

Any suggestions, so I don’t hang myself with it?
